Trézor® — Starting Up Your Device
A friendly, secure quick-start guide to initialize your Trézor® hardware wallet. Follow these easy steps to set up, secure, and connect your device — safely and confidently.
1. Prepare — what you’ll need
Before unboxing: make sure you have a clean, offline-friendly workspace and a computer you trust. You’ll need:
Your Trézor® device and official USB cable.
A computer with a modern browser (Chrome, Edge, Brave, or Firefox recommended).
Paper and pen for writing your recovery seed — never store it digitally.
Security tip: Only visit the official start page (Trézor.io/Start®) and follow on-screen prompts. Never accept unsolicited setup help or install unverified software.
2. Initialize your device — step by step
Connect your Trézor® — plug it into your computer with the supplied cable. The device will power on and show a welcome screen.
Open the official start page — go to Trézor.io/Start® in your browser (type it directly). Follow the on-screen installer instructions to install the recommended companion app if required.
Create a new wallet — choose Create new on the device. The Trézor will generate a recovery seed (normally 12, 18, or 24 words).
Write down your recovery seed — write each word clearly on paper. Repeat the phrase back when the device asks to confirm. This seed is the ultimate backup — treat it like gold.
Set a PIN — choose a strong, memorable PIN on the device. The PIN protects access even if someone has your device physically.
After these steps your device will be initialized and ready to connect with wallets such as Trezor Suite, or compatible third-party wallets. Always verify the device screen for any prompts — never trust only the computer window.
3. Security best practices
Keep your seed offline
Never photograph, copy to cloud storage, or type your recovery seed. Store it in a secure location — consider a safe or a fireproof deposit box. Consider using a seed metal plate for long-term durability.
Verify device authenticity
When you first connect, the official start page and your Trézor® will guide you through a device authenticity check. Only proceed when verification succeeds.
Important: Trézor®-generated seeds are the only acceptable backup. If someone offers a “convenient” backup method that involves third-party servers or encrypted cloud storage, decline — it weakens your security.
4. Troubleshooting & common questions
My device won’t power on — what do I do?
Try a different USB cable or USB port. Ensure your computer’s USB ports are functioning. If the device still won’t power on, contact official Trézor® support.
Can I recover my wallet on another device?
Yes — your recovery seed can restore your wallet on any compatible hardware wallet that supports the same standard. Only restore on trusted devices.
What if I lose my recovery seed?
If the recovery seed is lost and you don’t have another backup, you will not be able to recover your funds. Create multiple physical backups and store them securely.
5. Next steps
Once initialized, install and open Trézor Suite or your chosen wallet app to manage cryptocurrencies, set up passphrase protection, and review additional security features. Consider learning about passphrases and advanced backups when you feel comfortable.
